When Christ was here, he established His church. "He called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles." (Luke 6:13) "The Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come." (Luke 10:1)
"Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
"And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone." (Ephesians 2:19-20)
There is order in Christ's church and there is reason for it.
"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
"Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
"That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
"But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ." (Ephesians 4:11-15)
The order and leadership of ordained men of God ensures that Christ's gospel and doctrine is taught as He taught it. This order is to establish and keep a "unity of the faith." It helps us to grow in our "knowledge of the Son of God" and to "grow up into him in all things."
I am grateful that there is a living prophet today to guide Christ's church. I am also grateful that I know for myself that Thomas S. Monson is the Lord's prophet. I have prayed to Heavenly Father in the name of Christ and received a personal witness through the Holy Ghost that Thomas S. Monson is called of God.
