As recorded in Amos 3:7 "the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." God "is the same yesterday, today, and forever." (1 Nephi 10:18) He has always revealed the Gospel through the prophets. Every prophet prophecied of Christ and taught His gospel as it had been revealed to them.
In our day the fulness of the Gospel of Christ has been revealed through modern-day prophets. This revelation has included our Heavenly Father's plan for us, His children. Also, we have come to learn more of the true character of God and His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.
God will continue to reveal truth for our day through His Prophets. We can know that the words they speak are the words of God if we will "ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost." (Moroni 10:4)
